THE FIRST STATE B TOURNAMENT

March 13-14, 1936: Huron College gymnasium

Officials: Leo B. Harmon, Mitchell; C. H. Holgate, Aberdeen

Oglala defeated Bridgewater, 24-22 in the championship game:

1936 All Tournament Team: Guards: Dave Brewer, Oglala; Robert Schimkat, Bridgewater; John Billington, Arlington; Centers: Loren Thornton, Harrisburg (Most Valuable Player); Clarence Schulte, Frankfort; Fowards: Sterling Big Bear, Oglala; Robert Taplett, Tyndall; Clinton Hanson, New Effington. (Hanson was the leading scorer with 45 points.)

The tournament was played in Huron. The gate receipts were only $ 1400; The tournament lost about $ 3,300.

Oglala starting lineup for the championship game: forwards: Sterling Big Bear, Ben Brewer; center: Irving Jumping Eagle; guards: Walter Means, Dave Brewer; Means led the scoring with 9 points. Oglala was coached by Elijah Smith, former Haskell football star. Oglala lost only two games during the season, to a strong Rapid City team, and to St. Francis. Rapid City lost to Huron in the Class “A” Championship game, 24-23; St. Francis was a power in the National Catholic Tournaments during this time.
